Description
In Japanese storytelling 'Ima wa mukashi' ('Now [it is] the past' )
is a very commonly used introductory phrase for fairytales, myths and folklore.
It roughly translates to the English 'Once upon a time'.
Another way of saying it would be 'mukashi mukashi' -
with the word mukashi (むかし) meaning 'olden days / time before / former'.
In German language most old stories (Geschichten),
myths (Mythen), sagas (Sagen) and fairytales (Märchen)
also (mostly) start with a similar phrase :
'Es war einmal vor langer Zeit...'
